MARQUETTE, Mich. – Mount Mary University softball team kicked off its 2014 campaign Saturday afternoon in the frozen tundra of Michigan's upper peninsula.

Playing in the annual Finlandia Dome Tournament, held at Northern Michigan University's Superior Dome, Mount Mary dropped its opening pair of games of the season, 21-3 against Marian University before being shut out by Simpson College, 15-0.

Mount Mary started off a bit rocky with a quick three-up-three-down visitor half of the first inning, before giving up 11 runs in the first inning to Marian.

The Blue Angels would respond in the second inning, as junior Katie Edwards (Mackinaw, Ill.) used a seven-pitch at-bat to smack home a deep double to center. An ensuing bunt attempt by freshman Phoenix Hulsey (Wauwatosa, Wis.) was misplayed by the third baseman, leading to the Angels' first run of the season.

Senior Katie Wolk (Oshkosh, Wis.) led off the fourth with a triple to deep right field. Edwards continued her strong showing two batters later by pasting a two-RBI homerun to straight away center, scoring Wolk.

Edwards also took the loss in the pitching circle against the Sabres, giving up five walks and recording one strikeout.

In the nightcap against Simpson, MMU was able to put the ball in play—unfortunately it was almost always where the Storm players were lurking. Sophomore Nicole Weggen (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) tallied the Angels' only hit in the matchup, a drive through the right side in the fourth inning.

Freshman Lauren Wiech (Colgate, Wis.) threw a very strong two innings against the Storm, recording just two walks to a team that went 4-0 on the day. Wiech also pitched 1.2 innings against Marian, striking out the sixth batter faced in her college career.

The Blue Angels will be back in action tomorrow morning, completing Day Two of the Dome Tournament. Mount Mary will take on Edgewood College at 7:00 am CT and finish up the day against Concordia University-Wisconsin around 10:30 am CT.
