Blue Angels Go Even On The Day

GREENFIELD, Wis. – The Mount Mary University softball team split Wednesday's doubleheader against visiting Rockford University (6-28). The Blue Angels (8-22) are now have two games left to tie the school's single season record for wins at nine.

Game one saw some more MMU late inning heroics, not to mention an outstanding performance by Katie Edwards (Sr./Mackinaw, Ill.). The Blue Angels began their scoring in the first after a triple by Nicole Weggen (Jr./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) was followed up by a sharp laced RBI single to center field by Ashley Contreras (Fr./College Station, Texas), last week's Association of Division III Independents Softball Player of the Week.

After giving up the lead in the fourth, the Blue Angels led off the inning with Edwards, who promptly unloaded a homerun to tie things up 2-2.

Down again, the Blue Angels cut into the 5-2 deficit with a two out homerun by Payton Hintz (Fr./Almond, Wis.). The Regents would then carry that 5-3 lead going into the seventh.

The second triple of the game for Weggen set up the comeback in the bottom of the seventh. Contreras again backed up the Weggen three bagger, this time with a sharp double scoring the run. Hintz then singled in Contreras to tie the game up. That is when Edwards blasted her first collegiate walk-off homerun, winning the game 7-5 in dramatic fashion.

The day's second game was almost the exact opposite for the Blue Angels. MMU had six errors in the contest, and mustered just three hits in the five innings played.

The Regents took the game 9-1, of the nine runs for the Regents, only two were earned. Edwards led the Blue Angels offensively in game two as well going 1-2 at the plate with the lone RBI.

Now the Blue Angels will get ready for their season finale against Maranatha Baptist University (1-22). The 2015 closer will be on Friday April 24th in Watertown, Wis. with first pitch set for 3:00 pm.
