Blue Angels Finish On High Note

Blue Angels Finish On High Note

WATERTOWN, Wis. – The 2015 Mount Mary University softball season ended the same way it began, with a Blue Angels victory. MMU (9-22) defeated Maranatha Baptist University (1-23) in the lone game of the scheduled doubleheader with a score of 12-2; game two was cancelled due to rain.

MMU came out blasting the ball right away. The Blue Angels scored five runs in the opening frame and it was all started with a leadoff single by Molly Peck (Fr./Milwaukee, Wis.), who later scored off a Nicole Weggen (Jr./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) RBI double.

After the Blue Angels batted around in the first, the only MMU error of the day led to the Sabercats first run. MMU answered right back in the second to take back their five run cushion.

Another big inning for the Blue Angels in their turn in the fourth as Ashley Contreras (Fr./College Station, Texas) hit a two run homerun. More Blue Angels offense shined through the inning making it 10-1 heading to the bottom half.

In the very first game of the 2012 Blue Angels softball season, a young prospect by the name of Katie Edwards (Sr./Mackinaw, Ill.) blasted a two run homer in only her second at-bat. In a fitting ending to the career of Edwards, the senior crushed a two run homerun in her final collegiate at-bat.

The game concluded in five innings, giving Nikki Festge (Jr./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) the win. Setting her season record at 5-10 and marks her 11th complete game of the season.

Just one game away from breaking the school's single season win record, the rain was too steady to continue playing safely so the final game will be cancelled.

The lone senior on the 2015 roster, Katie Edwards will be missed by all Blue Angels fans, the senior was instrumental not only in the team's success, but also a leader on campus as the President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The efforts that Edwards made both on and off the field will be hard to replace.

The win against MBU gives MMU a final record of 9-22 and a sweep on the season series with the Sabercats. A Big jump from the previous two seasons, but the Blue Angels are still looking to improve in the offseason. With the dedication and focus of this year's players and coaches, the Blue Angels softball team is on the rise.
