Preview Lakeland vs MMU

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Today the Mount Mary University softball team will head north to face the Lakeland University Muskies (9-13, 3-5 NACC) in a doubleheader at the Lakeland University Softball Field. The first of two Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference teams that the Blue Angels (6-14) will be playing this week, the Muskies are coming off a split with Dominican University (18-8, 3-5 NACC) as the teams are tied for seventh in the NACC.

The Blue Angels are coming off a 2-2 stint this last weekend. MMU first put on an offensive display in their first doubleheader with Maranatha Baptist University (2-14) as they accomplished the astonishing statistical anomaly of scoring one or more runs in every inning of a doubleheader: statistically more rare than a pitcher throwing a perfect game or a batter hitting for the cycle.

Following that, the Blue Angels lost two straight to host Loras College (20-6). The Duhawks held the Blue Angels to just eight hits in their two games after MMU had 30 combined hits against Maranatha in the prior doubleheader.

The Muskies hit .275 as a team this season. Mikayla Hilton and Jessica Beaudry have consistently led that charge at the plate hitting .373 and .358 respectively. Beaudry post a team leading .547 slugging percentage which has translated to her leading her team with 11 RBIs.

The very effective pitching staff of LU has garnered a 2.84 ERA to this point in the season. Not a staff that gives away free bases either, the Muskies have only combined for 30 walks in the 608 official faced batters.

Audrey Beck (Fr./Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Sidnee Turnage (Fr./Hesperia, Calif.) have turned in consistent performances this year as both Blue Angels are hitting north of .400. Those two are not the only Blue Angels crushing the ball this season. As a team, MMU is hitting .323 this year; the Blue Angels hit .235 as a team in 2016.

Game one will begin at 3:00 pm today at the Lakeland University Softball Field. Follow mtmaryathletics.com for scoring updates, news and the games' box scores.
