Blue Angels Breakout Bats

WATERTOWN, Wis. – The Mount Mary University softball team (8-16) snapped their four-game losing streak today as they swept their doubleheader with Maranatha Baptist University. The Sabercats (6-18) led in game one, but a pair of Sidnee Turnage (Fr./Hesperia, Calif) homeruns energized the Blue Angels for the dual victory.

Game one saw Adrianna Nester (Fr./Anaheim, Calif.) get the start in the circle for the Blue Angels. Nester worked through the majority of the game with 6.0 innings pitched. She gave up the lead in the third inning when the Sabercats scored an unearned run on a steal play with runners on first and third base.

MMU answered back in the top of the fourth inning when Sidnee Turnage hit her first of two home runs.

The Sabercats came back in their turn in the fourth to take the lead when the third single in the inning scored Amy Miller from third base making things 2-1 in favor of MBU.

Amelia Flint (Jr./Whitefish Bay, Wis.) tied the game the next half inning with an RBI-single through the middle of the infield which scored Payton Hintz (Jr./Almond, Wis.) from third base.

Turnage's second homerun in the sixth inning gave MMU the lead, which they would not surrender the entire evening.

MMU scored four more insurance-runs in the seventh inning after two walks, one of which was an intentional walk to Turnage, which setup the Blue Angels to score on three separate RBI-doubles.

Never giving in, the Sabercats cut the score to 7-5 in the final inning, but could not push extra innings as Stephanie Norman (Fr./Noblesville, Ind.) recorded the final out of the game on a looking strike out.

Five different Blue Angels recorded an RBI in game one including Audrey Beck (Fr./Costa Mesa, Calif.), Katie Arce (Fr./Cypress, Calif.), and Madison Ledda (So./Tracy, Calif.).

Nester finished the game giving up five hits, two runs, one earned run while striking out six. The win for Nester moves her to 3-6 on the season.

MMU continued the hot hitting throughout the second contest as they jumped out to a quick 7-0 before finishing the third frame. A mix of patience and hitting netted the Blue Angels 14 runs on nine hits and 12 walks.

Seven Blue Angels hit RBIs in game two. Haley Jacquez (Fr./Oakley, Calif.) led the team in RBIs with three, the first of which came via walk. Jacquez finished 2-of-2 from the plate.

Katie Arce also paced the offense going 3-of-3 with two doubles and two RBIs.

In the circle, Hannah Harnsberger (Fr./Hillsboro, Ore.) got the complete game victory and is now 4-8 on the season.

Following tonight's doubleheader, the Blue Angels will have an opportunity to tie and perhaps break the school's single-season wins record tomorrow. MMU will host Finlandia University (18-11) at Neumann Family Softball Field Fri. Apr. 21 with first pitch at 3:00 pm. Live stats will be made available at mtmaryathletics.com.
