Saturday Softball Split For MMU

Saturday Softball Split For MMU

MILWAUKEE – Today at the Neumann Family Softball Field, the Mount Mary University softball team split their two-game series with visiting North Central College (16-16). The win for the Blue Angels moves them to 10-18 on the season, and sets the program's new single season wins record.

Game one may not appear too thrilling via the box score with no extra base hits for the winning team and only three runs scoring overall, however, the extra-inning 2-1 win for MMU was packed with highlight-reel plays and a memorable walk-off hit to cap things off after nine innings.

Stephanie Norman (Fr./Noblesville, Ind.) started at pitcher for MMU in the first game. Norman scattered four hits across the first four innings of play and never found herself in much hot water as she let her defense do their job.

MMU was held hitless in the contest until the beginning of the fourth inning. That is when Madison Ledda (So./Tracy, Calif.) broke that dry spell with a single to left center. The Blue Angels stranded a pair of runners in that frame leaving the game tied at 0-0.

The Cardinals scored the first run on a single to center field by shortstop Anna Seffernick in the top of the fifth. NCC nearly expanded the lead to 2-0, but a web-gem of a play by second basemen Haley Jacquez (Fr./Oakley, Calif.) saved a run and ended the frame with MMU only down a run.

The Blue Angels then got a clutch flair-shot to right field from third basemen Katie Arce (Fr./Cypress, Calif.) that scored Ledda from second tying the game after six completed.

Hannah Harnsberger (Fr./Hillsboro, Ore.) relieved Norman in the circle to start the seventh frame and got a quick 1-2-3 inning. Harnsberger continued to supply the relief for her team for the next 3.0 innings giving up just one hit as she pitched to contact for all her outs.

MMU got a one-out single from Lisa George (Fr./Naches, Wash.) in the bottom of the ninth inning to spark a rally. Payton Hintz (Jr./Almond, Wis.) then replaced George on first on the subsequent fielder's choice. Michaela Buchholz (Fr./Germantown, Wis.) kept things rolling with another single. Then Amelia Flint (Jr./Whitefish Bay, Wis.) flared a single over the shortstop's head to score the walk-off win.

Norman did the yeoman's work pitching 6.0 innings, surrendering one earned run off eight hits and striking out two batters with no decision. Harnsberger picked up the win in relief and is now 5-9 on the year.

Adrianna Nester (Fr./Anaheim, Calif.) got the start in the circle in game two. The Cardinals came out in the first inning attacking on offense and got three quick runs off three hits, one MMU error and one walk.

NCC added another run in the second inning off a pair of hits, but then broke things wide open in the third frame when a walk and two singles loaded the bases with no outs. Harnsberger came in relief in the circle, and got a quick double-play, but the Cardinals scored on that play and followed that up with a two-out RBI-double that made things 6-0, which was the game's final score.

MMU scattered their four hits in the second contest. Sidnee Turnage (Fr./Hesperia, Calif.) led that charge going 2-of-3 from the plate.

Nester was pegged with the loss and is now 4-7 on the year. Harnsberger pitched the final 5.0 innings surrendering three hits and no runs while striking out two.

The Blue Angels return to action Wed. Apr. 26 at the MSOE Softball Field. The annual doubleheader with the Raiders will again feature the "Strikeout Cancer" event.
