Blue Angels Grind Away

CLERMONT, Fla. – Today at the Legends Way Ballpark, the Mount Mary University (0-6) dropped a pair of games at their early season spring tournament. The Blue Angels lost game one against St. Thomas (Minn.) 8-0, then Mt. St. Vincent traded runs with MMU to win 12-4 in five innings.

The Tommies (7-4) took an early in the top of the first inning following a double and an error on the throw in from the outfield when St. Thomas scored the first two runs of the game. After an RBI single in the first, the Blue Angels were able to get out of the inning down 3-0.

St. Thomas was able to add two unearned runs in the second inning to further things to 5-0. The pair of runs came off two hits and two errors. The Tommies then ripped two doubles in the third inning, both of which scored an RBI and inflated things 7-0.

The Tommies added the eighth run in the fourth inning effectively ending the game.

MMU's one baserunner in the first game when Virginia Peterson (Fr./Milwaukee, Wis.) received the team's only walk. Hayley Dunning and Sammy Hogan combined for the no-hitter for St. Thomas. Dunning went the majority of the innings with 3.1 and six strikeouts.

Hannah Harnsberger (So./Hillsboro, Ore.) was given the loss surrendering six earned runs and striking out three batters.

MMU picked up the offense in the second contest against Mt. St. Vincent. The Dolphins grabbed an early lead on a pair of unearned runs in the first inning.

After a double from MSV in the second, the Blue Angels were able to respond in their turn in the third inning when Payton Hintz (Sr./Almond, Wis.) came through with another clutch hit. With two outs and the bases loaded, Hintz delivered with a shot to right field.

The Dolphins quickly responded in the bottom of the third inning with a two-RBI single which pushed things to 7-3.

MMU added one more run when Haley Johnson (So./Germantown, Wis.) hit a sacrifice fly to right field. The deep shot scored the final run for the Blue Angels making the score 7-4. After the Dolphins added four runs off of three hits and two errors in the fourth inning, an extra run in the fifth for Mt. St. Vincent spread the lead to eight and triggered the eight-run rule.

Adrianna Nester (So./Anaheim, Calif.) got the start in game two and is now (0-3). Nester gave up five earned runs off of 12 hits, four walks and struck-out three.

Michaela Buchholz (So./Germantown, Wis.) led the Blue Angels in the second game going 2-of-3 from the plate.

The Blue Angels will head back to the field tomorrow to play two Midwest opponents in their final games at Legends Way Ballpark. MMU will take on Loras Wed. Mar. 28 at 8:00 am CDT, then they will turn around and play University of Wisconsin Stevens Point at 10:30 am CDT.
