Eagles Take Two

LISLE, Ill. – Today at the Benedictine Softball Field, the host Benedictine University Eagles (14-9) defeated the Mount Mary University softball team in both games of their doubleheader today. The Eagles took game one 10-0, then won the second contest with a score of 11-0 in five innings.

The Eagles took an early lead in the first game as they jumped ahead 4-0 two hits and three Blue Angel errors with hurler Adrianna Nester (So./Anaheim, Calif.) in the circle. MMU adjusted in the field for the second inning, but two more errors by the Blue Angels (0-12) and a Benedictine hit in the frame pushed two more runs across, one of which was unearned.

MMU responded in their turn in the third inning with back-to-back one-out singles which gave the Blue Angels their first runner in scoring position for the game. Following the mentioned base hits from Hannah Harnsberger (So./Hillsboro, Ore.) and Nester, Haley Jacquez (So./Oakley, Calif.) lined a shot to center field to load the bases for MMU with two outs. The runners were then left stranded to end the third.

The Eagles expanded their lead to 10-0 in the bottom of the third inning following three extra-base hits including a two-RBI triple from Angie Malsack.

Harnsberger hit a groundball single with one out in the top of the fifth for the Blue Angels final hit of the game. Harnsberger was able to move to second base on a wild pitch but was left stranded to end the game in five innings.

Nester was given the loss in the circle and is 0-6 on the season. The sophomore went 4.0 innings while she struck out three batters and surrendered seven earned runs off of seven hits and two walks.

Harnsberger led the offense in game one going 2-of-2 officially from the plate.

Harnsberger was the starting pitcher in game two against the Eagles. BU again jumped out to a lead in the first inning following a leadoff double from Malsack, a walk and two more hits. The early offense for the Eagles gave them a 3-0 lead after one inning.

The second inning saw the Eagles push the lead out further as they batted around the order. BU pushed across six runs in the inning off of six hits including two extra-base hits and a pair of errors from MMU which did not lead to additional runs in the frame.

The Eagles added two more runs in the third to push things to 11-0.

MMU put pressure on in the fourth inning after Nicole Krietemeyer (Fr./Fountain, Colo.) was hit by a pitch. Payton Hintz (Sr./Almond, Wis.) then got the Blue Angels second hit of the contest after Krietemeyer was given first base. Krietemeyer was doubled off second base following a fly out to end the inning.
