Blue Angels Grab Sweep

WATERTOWN, Wis. – The Mount Mary University softball team grabbed their first wins of the season today against their rival Maranatha Baptist University (0-14). MMU captured the first game with a 14-4 score after six innings, then turned around and took game two 10-0 in five innings.

The Blue Angels seemed to take out their frustration from the weather destroying their 2018 schedule the first time they stepped into the batter's box today at Brandt-Quirk Park. The six-run opening frame for the Blue Angels in game one was all started with a leadoff walk taken by Amelia Flint (Sr./Whitefish Bay, Wis.). The speedy centerfielder swiped second base on the subsequent play, then four MMU hits and three more walks gave the Blue Angels a sizeable 6-0 lead.

MMU loaded the bases in the top of the third inning to again put pressure on the Sabercats. That is when Haley Jacquez (So./Oakley, Calif.) drew the bases load walk to give the second basemen her first of three RBIs on the day and a 7-0 lead for the Blue Angels.

Adrianna Nester (So./Anaheim, Calif.) followed that up with a two RBI single up the middle to further pad the lead for the Blue Angels in the third.

The Sabercats answered in the bottom of the third with a bases loaded single to right field off the bat of Harmony Bailey. The two-run shot gave MBU life and made the score 9-2.

After the Sabercats added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Blue Angels came back in their turn in the sixth to bat around the order. 10 batters came to the plate in the top of the sixth with the Blue Angels scoring five runs off four hits and two walks, including another RBI via walk for Jacquez.

Hannah Harnsberger (So./Hillsboro, Ore.) was given the win in the decision and is now 1-7 on the season. Harnsberger finished 5.0 innings giving up four runs, two earned runs off eight hits and one walk while striking out five.

MMU recorded 14 hits in the contest; all singles. Nester led the charge going 3-of-4 from the plate with three RBIs and one run scored. Five other Blue Angels recorded multi-hit games.

The bats carried over to the second game where the Blue Angels again grabbed the lead early. This time Haley Johnson (So./Germantown, Wis.) hit a bases loaded single up the middle to give MMU a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

MMU would score in each of the five innings in game two. Their biggest output came during the top of the third. Again, Jacquez got the scoring started with a bases load walk to grab her third RBI of the day. In fact, the Blue Angels would grab four runs in the frame with only one hit from Haley Johnson.

Perhaps nestled under all the offensive output was one of the Blue Angels best pitching performances of the season. Nester got the decision in game two and now sits at 1-7 on the season but did so surrendering only one hit which sadly came with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Nester went 5.0 innings striking out seven batters and had no walks.

Offensively, Haley Johnson led the charge going 2-of-3 from the plate with three RBIs. Flint helped out going 1-of-2 with two runs and a pair of walks.

After today's doubleheader, the Blue Angels will travel back to Watertown, Wis. to rekindle the series on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm on Apr. 25, stay tuned to mtmaryathletics.com for updates and scores on Wednesday's games.
