MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee School of Engineering (21-11) defeated the visiting Mount Mary University Blue Angels in both games of their doubleheader. The Raiders won the first contest 9-1 in six innings, then took the second game 12-0 in six innings.
The Raiders took the lead in the first inning when a leadoff triple from Rachel Ziemba resulted in a subsequent sacrifice fly. Starting pitcher Hannah Harnsberger (So./Hillsboro, Ore.) limited the scoring getting a ground out and a pop out to end the frame.
A leadoff homerun from the Raiders in the second inning pushed the lead out to 2-0. A one-out triple and single gave the Raiders another run and put more pressure on MMU. The Blue Angels defense then came through with a timely double play where third basemen Adrianna Nester (So./Anaheim, Calif.) grabbed a line drive out of the air and fired back to first base in time to pickoff the runner and end the inning.
MSOE added two more runs in the bottom of the third on a walk, two hits and a Blue Angel error.
MMU responded in their turn in the fourth inning when Haley Jacquez (So./Oakley, Calif.) reached on an error by the Raiders on a hard-hit grounder to first. Jacquez moved to second base with two outs when Michaela Buchholz (So./Germantown, Wis.) sent her home on a shot to left field.
The Raiders added a run in the fifth inning, then ended things early when they went off for five hits, all singles, that resulted in two runs scoring. The 9-1 score resulted in Harnsberger moving to 2-8 on the season after going 5.0 innings.
Buchholz led the Blue Angels at the plate in the first game going 2-of-3 with an RBI.
In game two, the Blue Angels sent Adrianna Nester to start in the circle. In the top of the first, Nester laced a two-out single, but was left stranded. In the bottom half, the Raiders attacked with a leadoff double and eventually scored their runner on a sacrifice fly.
MSOE attacked again in the second inning scoring two more runs off of three hits and one Blue Angel error. Then the Raiders added two more runs in the on a pair of singles, a walk and another sacrifice fly.
12 batters came to the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning, which resulted in seven runs and a 12-0 lead for the Raiders after four.
Nester was dealt the loss and is now 2-8 on the season. The sophomore hurler surrendered five earned runs off 13 hits and walked three. She also led the offense for the Blue Angels going 2-of-2 from the plate.
The Blue Angels will host Trinity International (23-13) on Sat. Apr. 28. Live stats will be made available for the first home contest of the season for the Blue Angels. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for 12:00 pm at Infinity Fields in Waukesha, Wis.
