Sabres Get Ahead Early On Blue Angels

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Mount Mary University basketball team lost to the Marian University Sabres 73-28 today at the Sadoff Gymnasium. The loss puts MMU at 0-4, and has the Sabres out to a 2-0 record to start the 2014-15 season.

For both teams today, the rosters are predominantly underclassmen. Early on in the season, the youthful Blue Angels have been trying to find the cohesive rhythm on both sides of the court. MMU has been trying to take better shots, and today, the Blue Angels double their shooting percentage from their rough night from the floor against Clarke University.

The night started off a bit slow for both teams offensively, it would not be until the 17 minute mark that either team could muster the game's first bucket. Once the Sabres hit the first field goal, Marian University went on a 16-2 run. Once the Blue Angels got warmed up, the Sabres continue to attack from outside the three point line at 38 percent. Marian's Nicole Paulus (So./Belgium, Wis.) hit four of the team's 15 three pointers.

After the first half ended 47-12 in favor of Marian, the Blue Angels clamped down on the defense allowing only 26 points in the second half. Becky Onan (Fr./Grafton, Wis.) was part of the MMU defensive presence getting two blocks, one steal, and ripping down six defensive rebounds.

Jasmine Meyer (Fr./Lansing, Kan.) has been a major bright spot for the Blue Angels this season. In today's contest, Meyer led the Blue Angels with 10 points, two steals, and four offensive rebounds. Meyer has taken a key role in every game on both sides of the court averaging 6.8 rebounds per game and 9.2 points per game, all the while shooting 52 percent from the floor.

Another quick turnaround for the Blue Angels as they prepare the Bloechl Center Northland College on Tuesday Nov. 25th at 6:00 pm.
