Lakers Take Rematch

Lakers Take Rematch

MILWAUKEE -- Another tough night for Mount Mary University (5-16) tonight at the Bloechl. The Blue Angels lost to the visiting Silver Lake College Lakers (19-7) with a final score of 81-38.

The Blue Angels have had issues with getting their offense going early. Tonight, during the rematch, Mount Mary did not have that issue. MMU jumped out in front of the Lakers early with a 7-0 scoring burst. Swarming on defense, and attacking the basket early gave the Blue Angels their largest lead of the evening.

Silver Lake came back in a big way after going the first three minutes without a bucket. Two steals, and a couple baskets later, the Lakers tied it up 7-7. Once Silver Lake evened the score, they would go on a 28-13 run to end the half ahead at a score of 35-20.

The Blue Angels actually shot better percentages in every shooting category during the first 20 minutes, but the 21 first half turnovers by MMU was the difference.

This season has been filled with remarkable second half efforts, but the toll of five games in a week weighed heavily on the Blue Angels. Even with a 30 point lead and 10 minutes left to go, the full court and hard trapping half court defenses were still in effect by the Lakers. The hard defensive press wore down on the already fatigued Blue Angels lineup, and left no chance for that second half spark MMU fans are used to seeing.

Another solid evening for this season's freshmen class. Chrisandra Freeman (Fr./Cedar Rapids, Iowa) finished with 12 points, six rebounds and two steals. Becky Onan (Fr./Grafton, Wis.) went all out on both sides of the court with 11 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and four blocks. Jasmine Meyer (Fr./Lansing, Kan.) finished with nine points, eight rebounds, two steals and three blocks.

Following the Lakers, the Blue Angels will host UC Santa Cruz for the first time in school history. The Banana Slugs are slotted for Sunday Feb. 15th with a 1:00 pm tipoff at the Bloechl.
