Inferno Ride Early Spark To Win

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University Blue Angels lost their 2015-16 season opener to host Alverno College 75-31. The loss makes the Blue Angels 0-1 early on and the Inferno 1-0.

The opening frame started off with Alverno rattling off the first 24 points of the contest before the Blue Angels sunk their first bucket at the top of the key from rookie Taylor Yordt (Fr./Omaha, Neb.). After forcing a tough shot and a pair of turnovers by the Inferno, Becky Onan (So./Grafton, Wis.) followed up with full contact layup making it 24-4.

Starting the second quarter 32-4, the Blue Angels picked up the defensive efforts for the subsequent 10 minutes. The amped up defense held the Inferno to just eight points. MMU added five of their own making it 40-9 at half.

The third quarter saw another tight defensive effort for the Blue Angels. Holding the Inferno to just 13 points and scoring six points for the navy and gold. Onan led the attack with a pair of baskets near the left wing; both on baseline throw-ins.

In the closing frame the Blue Angels played almost even with their rival putting up 16 points as the Inferno dropped 22.

Leading the game in points and second in rebounds with 23 and eight respectively, Mollie Mikyska was a solid presence near the paint. Teammate Julie Gallegos played maestro with a game leading seven assists.

Returners Shandrieka Richardson (Sr./Atlanta, Ga.) and Becky Onan led the offensive attack scoring 13 and 11 points respectively. Richardson showed off her long ball going 2 of 2 beyond the arc on the way to her big night.

Onan led the glass clean up with five rebounds. Teammate Ariel Oviedo (Jr./Shawano, Wis.) got the offense going with a team leading five assists.

While the steals were spread evenly across the Blue Angels roster, the late surge in defense forced 25 turnovers.

A quick turnaround for MMU as they will get ready to host Emmaus Bible College tomorrow at the Bloechl Center. The Blue Angels will tip-off with the Eagles Sat. Nov. 14 at 2:00 pm. All MMU home games will be available via live stats and streaming online at mtmaryathletics.com.
