Eagles Take Early Season Contest

MADISON, Wis. – As the 2015-16 season continues to get underway, the Mount Mary University basketball team lost to host Edgewood 60-35. The loss for the Blue Angels gives them a 1-2 mark on the season, and moves the Eagles to 1-1.

Early on, the Eagles controlled the glass on both ends just a bit more out-rebounding the Blue Angels nine to four. The difference meant Edgewood going into the second quarter ahead 22-11.

No momentum carried over for Becky Onan (So./Grafton, Wis.) who had nine points in the first quarter, the forward was held totally scoreless in the second. The rest of the Blue Angels put up four points in the frame, but held the Eagles to 14 points keeping the score within range at half.

The teams played even in the third scoring eight each. MMU shot 2-12 from the floor in the quarter; both baskets made where beyond the arc. The Eagles points were all scored within the 3-pointer, shooting 4-12 as a team while Rachel Pope was 3-3 in that time.

The fourth quarter saw the biggest offensive output for MMU with 12 points. One of the most memorable score was a defensive rebound by Jess Runge (Jr./Freedom, Wis.) turned coast-to-coast solo fastbreak that the point guard finished with a right hand layup.

Onan led the offense for the Blue Angels with 19 points and the led defense with three steals and three blocks. Teammate Runge went 3-of-8 from the field scoring six and also led the team along with Ariel Oviedo (Jr./Shawano, Wis.) with six rebounds each.

"We tightened up the talking and urgency in the second half and you could see the difference." Head Coach Marc Heidorf continues to look at the big picture, "We were a little better today than we were last time out. We will take what we learned, get back in the gym, and see where we are at Saturday vs. Marian."

As coach pointed out, the Blue Angels will face Marian University this Saturday at the Bloechl Center. Live video and stats can be found at mtmaryathletics.com on Sat. Nov. 21 for the 2:00 pm tip off.
