Eagles Soar Over Blue Angels

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The traveling Mount Mary University Blue Angels lost to host Emmaus Bible College 72-53. After the win, the Eagles are now 14-4 and the Blue Angels now sit at 2-10 on the year.

Firing right away, both teams made use of the 3-point line early and often. In the opening quarter, four out of the six shots the Blue Angels made were from beyond the arc. Although MMU outshot the Eagles from 3-point territory, Emmaus hit 9-of-17 field goals to open up the game giving them a 21-16 lead after ten minutes.

MMU attacked the paint in the second shooting 6-of-17 from the field. The Eagles stayed true to their system and fired nine 3-pointers hitting three and taking a 39-29 lead into halftime.

The second half saw the Blue Angels add 24, but the accurate shooting and rebound controlling Eagles scored 33 and took down 28 rebounds in the half.

"We could not slow down their offense today." Head Coach Marc Heidorf clarified, "They have the components of a team that can score at will: quick PG [point guards] with good court vision, 3-point spot shooters, and a really strong post player manning the paint..."

Nakiah Kimble proved to be that "quick point guard" scoring five points while dishing out a game high nine assists and grabbing nine rebounds. Teammate Shelby Hembera led an accurate offensive attack shooting 10-of-13 on her way to 22 points and 15 rebounds.

Four of the five starters for the Blue Angels scored double-digits in points. Jess Runge (Jr./Freedom, Wis.) led MMU's attack with 14 points and five assists while also pulling in five rebounds. Fellow Blue Angels Becky Onan (So./Grafton, Wis.), Ariel Oviedo (Jr./Shawano, Wis.) and Shandrieka Richardson (Sr./Atlanta, Ga.) scored 12, 12 and 11 respectively.

Although taking the loss, the Blue Angels hit a season's best 47.1 percent from beyond the 3-point line. "Offensively we shot with confidence and no hesitation. If this was our 'light bulb' game and we can be this team now, today becomes a turning point even in a loss."

The Blue Angels now head home to prepare for a game against fellow Great South Athletic Conference team Finlandia University. The Lions will come to the Bloechl Center 0-17 on the season. The GSAC showdown is set for Wed. Feb. 3 with a 5:30 pm tipoff. Live stats and live video will be made available for the game at mtmaryathletics.com.
