Dutch Defeat Blue Angels

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University women's basketball team dropped their fifth straight game today against Central (Iowa) College by a score of 73-38. The loss at the Bloechl Center gives MMU a record of 1-5 on the season while the Dutch are now 6-1 to begin 2016-17.

The pace was set early on by the Dutch. Jumping out to a quick 10-3 lead, Central continued to apply the pressure and forced five turnovers from the Blue Angels, all five coming by way of the steal. Finishing the quarter 19-10, the Blue Angels kept in the game by shooting 2-of-6 from beyond the arc.

In the second quarter, the Dutch turned up the defensive pressure. While Central hit 6-of-16 from the field in the second, the Dutch also held their opponents to a 1-of-13 shooting performance in the same frame. Winning the quarter 18-2, Central College went into halftime with a 37-12 lead.

MMU battled through the second half despite trailing big in the first. Spreading the scoring across the roster, five of the six active Blue Angels scored a bucket in the third quarter. The Blue Angels also held the opposition to 23 points in the frame as they put up 16 of their own in the biggest offensive quarter of the night.

With no turnovers in the final frame, the Blue Angels again battled to get the game close. Losing the quarter 13-10, the Blue Angels forced the issue with five team offensive rebounds and a team effort 6-of-10 from the free throw line.

"To cut our turnovers down from 30 to 9 from Wednesday to tonight is a step in the right direction," said Mount Mary Head Basketball Coach Marc Heidorf, "Brooke [Uebersetzig] and Ariel [Oviedo] deserve a lot of credit for that, taking over the majority of the ball handling responsibilities in Jess' stead."

Becky Onan (Jr./Grafton, Wis.) led the scoring for MMU with eight points, eight rebounds and two blocks. For the second straight game, no Blue Angel scored in double digits, however, all five starters scored seven or more points and all six active Blue Angels scored.

True to form, Claire Marburger led the Dutch with 22 points and four offensive rebounds.

The Blue Angels will try to rid themselves of their five game losing streak Fri. Dec. 9 at the Bloechl Center. MMU will host Grace Bible College (3-6) with tipoff set for 6:00 pm. Live stats and video will be made available at mtmaryathletics.com.
