Runge And Onan Honored

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Association of Division III Independents released their All-Independent awards for women's basketball today. Among the recipients were Mount Mary University Starters Jess Runge (Sr./Freedom, Wis.) and Becky Onan (Jr./Grafton, Wis.) for their work in the 2016-17 basketball season.

Senior Jess Runge was named to the All-Independent first team after a season where the guard nearly doubled her points per game average from her junior season. Runge did not just inflate her scoring to 15.0 points per game, but was deadly accurate. Three times this season, Runge hit over 90 percent from the field all while shooting 10 or more shots.

Runge also had an affinity for defense as the guard led her team with 3.1 steals per game, which had her at fourth in the AD3I in that category. Along with ripping the ball out of the clutches of her opponents, Runge pulled down 5.4 rebounds per game which was second on her team.

Forward Becky Onan earned a spot on the All-Independent second team. Onan averaged 13.9 points per game and played in every game for the Blue Angels this season. The junior forward saw big improvements on the free throw line for the second straight year as she raised her percentage from 60.7 her sophomore season, to 74.8 this season.

This year Onan led her team with 7.0 rebounds per game. Her prowess on the boards helped her record four double-doubles this season for points and rebounds.

Runge and Onan averaged over 50 percent of the Blue Angels scoring in 2016-17, along with one third of the team rebounds and over 50 percent of MMU's steals. With that effort, the two helped MMU tie the program's single season win record with a final record of 8-12.
