Grizzlies Win

FRANKLIN, Ind. – Today at the Spurlock Center, the Mount Mary University basketball team lost to host Franklin College by a final score of 92-16. The win for the Grizzlies moves them to 1-0 and makes the Blue Angels 1-1 on the young season.

The Grizzlies jumped out to an early 13-0 lead. The Blue Angels were able to break that opening run when newcomer Brianna Valdez (So./Thornton, Colo.) knocked down a deep three-pointer. Franklin hit a 3-point shot of their own in the next possession which started a 15-0 run that finished the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Franklin continued to shoot efficiently as a team. the Grizzlies pushed the lead to 33-3, when Brooke Uebersetzig (Jr./Greenwood, Ind.) broke up the run with a three-point basket. The junior guard followed the 3-pointer up with a steal in the very next possession.

Despite slowing down the pace of the Grizzlies, FC shot 11-of-15 from the field in the second compared to the Blue Angels 2-of-11. The effective shooting from the Grizzlies stretched the lead to 52-9 at halftime.

FC continued to their efficiency in the third frame. The Grizzlies played 14 players in the quarter and were able to spread the scoring hitting 9-of-12 from the floor and 1-of-1 from outside the three-point line. The Blue Angels scored on a pair of free throws from Uebersetzig who went 2-of-2 from the line in the frame.

MMU added five more points in the fourth quarter as they hit 2-of-10 from the field. One of baskets being a 3-pointer from freshman guard Ty'Nika Bentley (Fr./Columbus, Ohio), her first collegiate points of her young career.

The Grizzlies added 20 points in the quarter hitting 9-of-15 from the field. Overall FC finished the game with a team shooting percentage of 66.7 and hit 6-of-11 from outside the 3-point line.

"All that matters now is what do we do with the lessons learned from today," asked Mount Mary Head Basketball Coach Marc Heidorf.

"Is everything forgotten by next practice," continued Heidorf. "Or do we use this as our springboard to a better understanding of what it takes to be able to compete at the level we faced today?"

Uebersetzig led the Blue Angels offense with five points. The guard also snatched three steals in the contest to lead her defense along with Erica Williams (So./Bloomington, Ill.) who finished the game with three steals and a team leading four rebounds.

The Blue Angels will return to action on Thu. Nov. 15 when they head across Milwaukee to take on longtime rival Alverno College. The season opener for the Inferno is set for 7:00 pm at Reiman Gymnasium. Live video and stats will be available at MtMaryAthletics.com.
