Blue Angels Scorch Inferno

MILWAUKEE – Tonight at the Reiman Gymnasium, the visiting Mount Mary University basketball team defeated Alverno College by a score of 80-66. The win for the Blue Angels moves MMU's record to 2-1 on the season while the Inferno move to 0-1. The win also marks the first time since the Blue Angels joined the NCAA, that MMU defeated their longtime rival.

After the Inferno opened their season with a 3-pointer to take the early lead, the Blue Angels answered right back when Melissa Golo (Fr./Boise, Idaho) hit a 3-point field goal of her own.

The two teams continued to trade points evenly until MMU was able to attain the 11-9 lead at the 3-minute mark of the first quarter. That sparked a 10-0 run for the Blue Angels, with two more MMU 3-pointers in the last three minutes.

The Blue Angels continued to hold that lead throughout the second quarter. The Inferno briefly cut MMU's lead to just one point with one minute left to go in the half, but the post presence of Erica Williams (So./Bloomington, Ill.) overtook the Inferno in the remaining time. Williams hit two shots in the paint to make things 33-29 at the half.

That was the closest the Inferno would come to retaking the lead. Again, the Blue Angels made a difference in the quarter with the 3-point shot. With Rae Grubbs (Jr./Covington, Ind.) hitting an astonishing 4-for-4 from outside the line in the quarter, MMU was able to add to their lead going into the fourth quarter.

The 3-point shot continued to help MMU add to the lead in the final frame. Brooke Uebersetzig (Jr./Greenwood, Ind.) went a perfect 3-for-3 from 3-point territory in the quarter. With a combined team effort of 11-of-14 from the free throw line from the Blue Angels, MMU went on to outscore the Inferno 28-22 in the fourth to secure the win.

"It was a team effort," said Uebersetzig. The guard and distributor continued her team praise, "People stepped up when they needed to, and the bench was a big part of the win."

4-of-5 starters for the Blue Angels scored in double-digits. Grubbs led the offense with 22 points as she hit 6-of-8 3-point field goals. Golo added 17 points and six assists to lead her team in dishes.

"Tonight was all about execution," explained Rae Grubbs, "starting from our bench play, all the way to our finishing on defense."

"We knew it was going to be an intense game, so we needed to be focused from the get-go and keep our energy up. That really shined through at the end of each quarter."

Erica Williams recorded her second double-double of the season. Williams went 7-of-8 from the free throw line on her way to 21 points and 16 rebounds. Teammate Uebersetzig also added 15 points with five assists.

The Blue Angels return to the Bloechl Center Sun. Nov. 18 against Andrews University (3-1). The Cardinals will take on the Blue Angels at 2:00 pm on Sunday. Live video and stats are available at MtMaryAthletics.com.
