Blue Angels Continue to Bomb

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University basketball team defeated the visiting Andrews University Cardinals by a final score of 69-60. The Blue Angels continued to hit their three-point opportunities against Andrews (3-2) and as a result, start the 2018-19 season 3-1.

After a brief two-game road trip over the last week, the Blue Angels returned to the Bloechl Center this afternoon. The first quarter saw MMU utilize their deep-shot to take the early lead. Hitting 3-of-8 from outside and forcing the Cardinals into nine turnovers in the frame, the Blue Angels were able to grab and maintain a 13-11 lead after ten minutes of action.

In the second quarter, the Cardinals quickly tied the game as Kia Williams slashed through the lane for a hard-fought layup. But the Blue Angels came right back and retook the lead, albeit brief, with a second-chance layup from newcomer Melissa Golo (Fr./Boise, Idaho).

After MMU pushed their lead to 26-21, the Cardinals went on a 9-2 run to reclaim the lead two minutes before halftime. After Erica Williams (So./Bloomington, Ill.) tied things up at 30-30 with a late put-back, the Cardinals attacked with a layup to take the lead yet again. Rae Grubbs (Jr./Covington, Ind.) then ended the half with a 3-point shot to make things 33-32 in favor of MMU.

AU began the second half with a quick layup in the paint and a pair of free throws in their first two possessions. As MMU has done throughout the early portion of the season, they got a 12-2 run started with a 3-point field goal, this time by Brooke Uebersetzig (Jr./Greenwood, Ind.).

That third quarter saw the Blue Angels expand their lead to 56-44, hitting 5-of-8 from outside the 3-point line.

In the fourth quarter, the Blue Angels salted away the lead hitting 5-of-16 from the field and holding their opponents to just three field goals in the final 10 minutes. Although the Cardinals hit 9-of-12 from the free throw line, the big lead from the third quarter allowed the Blue Angels to run out the clock late to take the 69-60 victory.

Grubbs led the offense for the Blue Angels with 21 points off 6-of-14 from 3-point land. Uebersetzig hit 4-of-11 from outside for 13 points to go along with her team leading seven assists and four steals.

Erica Williams recorded her third double-double of the season against the Cardinals. Williams hit 7-of-11 from the field for 15 points and pulled in 11 rebounds. Williams also dished out six assists and grabbed two steals.

The Blue Angels return to action Tuesday night when they head downtown to take on the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Start time for the Nov. 20th contest is set for 7:00 pm. Live stats and video will be available at MtMaryAthletics.com.
