Raiders Capture Win

MILWAUKEE – Tonight at the Kern Center, the host Milwaukee School of Engineering defeated the Mount Mary University basketball team by a final score of 54-43. The Raiders are now 2-0 as they begin Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play after their win over the 3-2 Blue Angels.

The two teams played evenly in the first quarter. The Raiders were able to grab a slight lead around the 3-minute mark when Wendy Guan scored off a steal from her Raider teammate, which pushed the score to 10-5.

The Blue Angels responded in their subsequent possession when Erica Williams (So./Bloomington, Ill.) attacked the paint and scored her second of three field goals in the quarter. Williams was able to cut the lead back down to one point with another bucket in the paint just moments later. The Raiders were able to add one more field goal before the quarter expired.

The Raiders were able to add to the lead in the second quarter. This time, the Raiders were able to expand the spread via the three-point shot. Although just hitting 41.7 percent from the field, all five of the Raiders second quarter field goals were from outside the 3-point line. In addition to the work at the free throw line, MSOE was able to swell the lead out to nine at the half.

In the third quarter, the Raiders moved inside the arc to produce the bulk of their scoring. MSOE hit 7-of-13 as a team for their most accurate frame of the evening. MMU hit 4-of-9 from the field, with a majority of their scoring coming from their bench. Ty'Nika Bently (Fr./Columbus, Ohio) led the Blue Angels in the quarter hitting 1-of-1 from outside and added an assist as well.

MMU outscored their opponent 12-7 in the final quarter. Bentley was again integral in the scoring. This time Bentley hit 2-of-4 from the field with a rebound while teammate Erica Williams added four points of her own going 1-of-1 from the field and a perfect 2-of-2 from the free throw line.

Williams led the Blue Angels scoring on the evening with 15 points and added nine rebound and a pair of steals as well. Teammate Ty'Nika Bentley scored 12 points in just 14 minutes of play. Bentley hit 5-of-7 from the field with 2-of-3 3-point field goals made.

"I feel we didn't come out with enough energy and were flat," commented Erica Williams. "…by the end of the 3rd we found it."

"We are a different group this year and we tried to keep pushing and never giving up," continued the sophomore forward. "We have to realize our talent level and never take our foot off the gas when we get our flow."

The Blue Angels will have until Sat. Dec. 1 to prepare for their next contest. That is when Northland will head to the Bloechl Center for a 3:00 pm showdown. Live stats and video will be available for the game at MtMaryAthletics.com.
