Sabercats Defeat Blue Angels

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University basketball team lost to the visiting Maranatha Baptist University today at the Bloechl Center. The Sabercats (14-6) led 27-21 at half, then hit 17-of-32 in the second half to grab the 72-48 victory over the Blue Angels (10-10) at MMU's Alumnae and Family Appreciation Day.

The Sabercats opened the game on a 7-0 run that stalled at the six-minute mark. The Blue Angels then pushed hard on defense and held their opponent to just three points over the next five minutes. MMU answered on offense and trailed by one with 90 seconds left to go in the quarter.

After the Blue Angels shrunk the deficit to one point, the Sabercats responded with 5-0 run to close out the opening quarter. MMU clawed right back in the second quarter following an MBU turnover to begin the frame. Erica Williams (So./Bloomington, Ill.) hit a bucket on the following possession for the Blue Angels despite the simultaneous foul by the Sabercats. Once Williams hit the following free throw MMU tied things up on their next possession when Brooke Uebersetzig (Jr./Greenwood, Ind.) hit a three-pointer 70 seconds into the second.

MBU spaced out their next few shots, but hit 5-of-16 from the field as a team and 2-of-2 from the free throw line to regain control of the lead. The Blue Angels kept pace throughout the quarter with both teams scoring 12 in the frame. MMU hit a more effective 5-of-8 from the field on their way to a dozen second-quarter points.

Starting the second half 27-21, the Sabercats slowly added to their lead in the third hitting 8-of-18 from the field while pulling down five offensive rebounds. Erica Williams answered scoring nine points in the quarter by herself. Williams hit 3-of-5 from the field and 3-of-7 from the free throw line to lead her team's 14-point output in the frame.

MMU posted 13 points in the final 10 minutes of action going 4-of-11 from the field and 3-of-7 from the free throw line as a team. The Sabercats were able to add to their lead in the fourth by hitting 9-of-14 from the field, which included 4-of-7 from outside the 3-point line. The 22 points in the final quarter pushed the MBU lead out further on their way to a 72-48 victory.

Williams led the Blue Angels on both sides of the court with 19 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Teammate Brooke Uebersetzig added eight points from the guard position adding 2-of-7 from outside.

Megan Johnson (Fr./Waukesha, Wis.) yeoman's work from the bench continued to shine through tonight at the Bloechl Center. The mid-season transfer has been a big boost for the Blue Angels and scored eight points in the Blue Angels matchup with the Sabercats.
