Sabercats Cap With Victory

WATERTOWN, Wis. – Host Maranatha Baptist University defeated the Mount Mary University basketball team tonight at the MBU Gymnasium 72-48. Although the Blue Angels end the 2018-19 season on a loss, their 10-11 record sets the new program record for wins in a season.

Tonight's contest opened with the Sabercats going on a 6-0 run via a pair of three-pointers in the first 50 seconds of the game. The Blue Angels responded by attacking the basket and getting to the free throw line. Rae Grubbs (Jr./Covington, Ind.) was the first to go a perfect 2-for-2 at the free throw line, then an interior bucket by Erica Williams (So./Bloomington, Ill.) on the following possession cut the deficit back down to two.

MBU regained momentum after the Williams' score and went on to hit 8-of-15 from the field and 3-of-4 from outside the three-point line. The Blue Angels were able to force four turnovers in the frame and hit 4-of-4 from the free throw line, but the Sabercats finished the quarter ahead 19-9.

MMU kept pace in the second quarter holding their opponent to 3-of-16 from the field and 0-of-5 from outside. The Blue Angels were able to cut the MBU lead down to five-point capitalizing on MMU hitting 4-of-4 team free throws, but the Sabercats hit 8-of-12 from the free throw line to push the score to 33-20 at halftime.

The Blue Angels came out of the locker room energized. After MMU forced the Sabercats into a missed shot, Williams found Grubbs open for a 3-pointer. Then after MMU stopped their opponent on the next possession, Brooke Uebersetzig (Jr./Greenwood, Ind.) knocked down another 3-point field goal cutting the MBU lead to seven.

With their highest offensive output of the night, the Blue Angels scored 18 points in the third quarter off 3-of-8 from outside and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line. MBU hit an effective 8-of-18 from the field in the third to add to their lead and finish the quarter up 53-38.

The Sabercats expanded their lead in the final quarter hitting 7-of-13 from the field and 4-of-6 from the field. MMU attacked from outside in order to shrink the lead and hit 2-of-11 from outside and 4-of-16 overall in the quarter.

Grubbs led the Blue Angels on offense with 14 points on 2-of-8 from outside and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. The two made 3-pointers adds to Grubbs' single-season record for 3-point field goals made with 40. Grubbs added a pair of steals to lead her squad on defense as well.

Teammate Erica Williams finished with 10 points and a team high nine rebounds and three assists. The sophomore forward finished her season averaging a double-double and tallied 11 such feats this season.
