Blue Angels Win Third Straight

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University basketball team (3-3) pulled out another come-from-behind victory over Martin Luther College tonight at the Bloechl Center. The Blue Angels trailed from late in the first quarter until the fourth; MMU shot 10-of-12 from the free throw line in the final five minutes to grab a 60-58 victory.

Erica Williams (Jr./Bloomington, Ill.) added her third double-double of the season in MMU's win over the Knights (0-7). The junior forward grabbed 10 rebounds and dropped 23 total points as she led her team in both categories. Williams hit 13-of-14 from the free throw line; she went 7-of-8 from line in the fourth quarter.

Teammate Rae Grubbs (Sr./Covington, Ind.) went an efficient 4-of-6 from the field while hitting 2-of-2 from outside the three-point arc for ten points. Grubbs added one block and a pair of steal to her defensive totals.

On the defensive side, Zyah Burnett (Jr./Indianapolis, Ind.) pulled down 10 rebounds, two steals and one block. The junior forward added three points and an assist on offense. Teammate Lucy Pavelko (Sr./Muskego, Wis.) led the Blue Angels with six steals.

In the opening quarter, the two teams traded the lead and baskets evenly. Not until late in the first did the Knights take the lead. MLC attacked the basket going 6-of-20 from the field as they went on to grab the 12-9 lead going into the second.

MMU continued to limit their opponent's scores in the second frame as MLC hit 6-of-21 in the quarter. The Blue Angels mirrored their offensive performance in the first and added nine more points. This time, the Blue Angels hit 3-of-12 from the field and 2-of-7 from the line. After twenty minutes of action, the Knights enjoyed a 25-18 lead.

As they have multiple times this season, the Blue Angels turned things around after their halftime talk. MMU came out in the third and hit 46.2 percent from the field along with 6-of-9 from the free throw line. Erica Williams led that third quarter effort hitting 3-of-4 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from the line. Along with their offensive surge, the Blue Angels forced the Knights into seven third-quarter turnovers.

With the Knights leading 40-36 to begin the fourth, the Blue Angels quickly carried their momentum from late in the third to the final frame as MMU tied the game 90 seconds into the quarter. After the two teams traded buckets, the Blue Angels began hitting their free throws at an impressive rate to recapture the lead. Williams hit a pair of free throw at the three minute mark to tie the game at 50, then Nyasia Hardy (Fr./Fort Wayne, Ind.) hit a free throw to give MMU the final lead of the game.

As a team, the Blue Angels went on to hit 10-of-12 in the final five minutes of action to take the lead and the team's third straight victory; MMU's longest win-streak in their record breaking season last year was five.

The Blue Angels will enjoy the Thanksgiving break and return to action Wed. Dec. 4 against the University of Chicago. The game starts at 5:00 pm and will have live stats available. Go to MtMaryAthletics.com for details, news and scores.
