Maroon Capture Victory

CHICAGO – The University of Chicago Maroon defeated the Mount Mary University basketball team by a final score of 74-23. After the win at their home court, the Maroon are now 6-2 on the season and the Blue Angels move to 3-4.

Junior forward Erica Williams (Bloomington, Ill.) led the Blue Angels with a team high 12 points and two steals. Teammates Nyasia Hardy (Fr./Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Lucy Pavelko (Sr./Muskego, Wis.) also swiped two steals each in Wednesday evening's contest against the Maroon.

MMU took the first lead of the game dropping the games opening bucket 18 seconds into play. After the initial score, the Maroon would hold the Blue Angels scoreless for the remaining of the quarter. Chicago went on to hit 7-of-20 from the floor on their way to a 14-2 lead after one quarter.

In the second frame, the Blue Angels continued to search for their offense. After two minutes of action, Erica Williams went to the line and hit the first point of the quarter for MMU. Williams would later hit two more free throws in the period. The Blue Angels were able to post five points in the frame, but the Maroon turned their offense around and hit 50 percent from both the field and outside the three-point line to gain a 34-7 lead at half.

As they have for much of the season, the Blue Angels had their best quarter right out of the "halftime talk." MMU forced the opposition into four turnovers and limited the Maroon to 16.7 percent from outside in the frame. Along with pesky defense, the Blue Angels scored 13 points for their highest output of the night.

Chicago ended the evening with their most effective offensive frame of the night. Hitting 7-of-9 from the field, the Maroon went on to outscore MMU 18-3 to take their fifth victory in a row.

The Blue Angels return to the Bloechl Center this weekend with a pair of games against Central College out of Pella, Iowa. The Dutch will head to Milwaukee for the back-to-back series against MMU beginning Sat. Dec. 7 at 2:00 pm. Live stats and video for the game will be available at MtMaryAthletics.com.
