Alverno Finish First

WAUWATOSA, Wis. – Today at Currie Park Golf Course, the Blue Angels hosted their second Mount Mary Invite of the season. This time, Alverno College took first place in team scoring with a 498: Alverno's Kaitlyn Schmick finished first in individual scoring with a 109.

Ending the day with a combine 569 team score, the Blue Angels continue to progress during their 2018 campaign. Even with the increasingly soggy fairways, heavy bunkers and soaking greens, MMU found a way to take seven strokes of their team score from yesterday's home opener.

Leading the way on the scorecard for the third consecutive event for the Blue Angels was Haley Jacquez (Oakley, Calif.). The junior has been a leader both on and off the course this season as the longest tenure player on the team and today she led MMU with a 134. Shooting a 67 on both the front and back nine, Jacquez finished the front nine with a double bogey on a 381-yard par-5.

Taylor Hienbuecher (Fr./Sycamore, Ill.) continues to follow the team's trend on the season as well. The freshman has shot a lower score than her previous in each event this season. This week the youngster finished with a 137 as she traveled Currie Park Golf Course for the first time in her career. Hienbuecher hit a couple double bogeys, most notably one on a 373-yard par-4.

In their second collegiate round of golf, both Melissa Golo (Fr./Boise, Idaho) and Ka'Riah Simmons (Fr./Genesee, Mich.) showed signs of improvement. Simmons finished with a 147, and drilled a long drive on her way to a double bogey on a 381-yard par-5. Golo finished with a 151 and found a way to take three shots less on the back nine with a 73.

The Blue Angels will return to the links on Fri. Sept. 21 when they come back to Currie Park Golf Course to take on Alverno. The first swings in the rivalry rematch begin at 3:00 pm on the home course for MMU. For updates, times and information on the Blue Angels, check out MtMaryAthletics.com.
