Season Opener Slips Away From Mount Mary

MILWAUKEE – Mount Mary University (0-1-0) loses in their 2014 season opener to Crown College (1-1-0) 8-1 at Mount Mary Field.

As the rain came pouring down throughout the contest, Blue Angel Becky Onan (Fr./Cedarburg, Wis.) displayed her effectiveness between the posts saving 22 of 30 shots on goal. 12 of those shots on goal coming in the first half, as Onan did her best to keep Crown to just 2 goals.

As the second half began, the Blue Angels had troubles containing the offensive onslaught from Crown. While Crown pickup their scoring in the second half with 6 goals, Samantha Samsa (Sr./ Cambridge, Minn.) would be instrumental to Crown's efforts as she lead the way with three assists for her team.

Emily Ristow (Jr./Sheboygan, Wis.) led the offensive side for the Blue Angels with 5 shots. Ristow and the Blue Angels made their best offensive attack count during the 75th minute of the contest as Ristow scored with the teams only shot on goal.

Crown College's Megan Wright (Jr./Newton, Iowa) seemed to be unstoppable. Wright led the team with 11 shots on goal, while six would find their way past Onan and the Blue Angels. Wright would subsequently set Crown College's single game record for goals in a single game at six.

Assistant Coach Jason Hood commented on the grind his goalie dealt with, "Though the score doesn't show it, Becky (Onan) was great in goal, coming up with numerous big saves." Onan wasn't the only bright spot to coach Hood, "Newcomer Ashley (Lehnen) also proved that she will be a huge part of our future success."

The Blue Angels will pick up the season tomorrow, Aug. 31 at Mount Mary Field. The Third Annual Mount Mary Invitational will conclude as the Blue Angels will take on Blackburn College tomorrow with a 11:00 am kickoff.
