Sabercats Outshoot Blue Angels

WATERTOWN, Wis. – In the rekindling of an old Lake Michigan Conference rivalry, Maranatha Baptist Univeristy defeated Mount Mary University 5-1 tonight. The game on Maranatha's campus was the first loss for the Blue Angels in over a week.

The Sabercats came right out attacking Becky Onan (Fr./Grafton, Wis.) and the Blue Angels defense. MBU took every shot in the first half with 12, two of those got by Onan making it 2-0 going into the locker rooms.

After the intermission, the Blue Angels got things going in the right direction. In the 57th minute Emily Ristow (Jr./Sheboygan, Wis.) got the first and only shot on goal of the night for MMU. The shot got past Michala Marino (Jr./Grand Blanc, Mich.) making the score 2-1. Once the euphoria of making it a one score game wore off, the Sabercats took control.

Shot after shot from Maranatha, and Onan did her best but could only prevent seven shots on goal in the second half. Once the dust settled, the final score was 5-1 MBU.

Onan finished with 10 saves to make her season total 146, leading the way in the Association of Division III Independents, and was ninth in NCAA DIII before the match. Ristow's goal gives her 16 this year and puts her ever impressive career total at 61.

The solid individual performances did little to buoy the spirits of Coach Joe Shokatz, "Call it whatever you want we just did not have it today." Optimism shined through for the coach however, "we look forward to redeeming ourselves Saturday."

Now the Blue Angels will host Rockford University this Saturday Oct. 18th. Kickoff is at 1:00 pm on Mount Mary Field.
