Blue Angels Streak Stopped By Inferno

MILWAUKEE – In the final match of the 2014 season, Mount Mary University lost to Alverno College 8-2. The game today at Mount Mary Field ends the Blue Angels four game winning streak.

Since joining NCAA DIII, MMU has lost every match to the Inferno. All-time, the series is now at 12-0 in favor of the Inferno. While the last contest was lopsided to the degree of 9-1, the Blue Angels made some incremental progress as they doubled up on goals, and prevented one less goal from the Inferno.

The shooting from the Inferno was relentless as they launched 44 shots to MMU's 6. Of the 44 shots, an astonishing 31 were on goal, Briquite Martinez (Fr./Waukesha, Wis.) led AC with four goals and two assists in the contest.

For the Blue Angels, it was tough to break away with any offense, as the Inferno controlled the ball for most of the contest. In the breakaways the Blue Angels had, Emily Ristow (Jr./Sheboygan, Wis.) displayed some amazing speed blazing past multiple defenders to get her five shots off. At the 73 minute mark, Nina Her (Sr./Brown Deer, Wis.) took away the ball from the opposition and cleared the ball to an emerging Ristow. Ristow broke away from multiple defenders and riffled a shot over the lunging goalkeeper making it 6-1 Inferno.

The final score for MMU came in the 80th minute when Ristow was fouled near the box and received a penalty shot. With just Ristow and the goalkeeper, Ristow bent a shot right past the fingertips of the goalkeeper making it 8-2.

Today's contest will be the last of the 2014 season for the Blue Angels. It is time for Blue Angels fans to say goodbye to two of their favorites; Nina Her who is second on the team with seven assists this season, and has been a cornerstone of the MMU defense, and Emily Ristow who leads all Blue Angels in history with 77 career goals. We all appreciate the hard work and dedication of these two, thank you both!
