Cardinals Ride Second Half To Win

MILWAUKEE – Today at Mount Mary Field, the Andrews University Cardinals defeated the Mount Mary University Blue Angels 5-2. The loss moves the Blue Angels to 0-12 on the year and makes the Cardinals 2-4.

In the first half, both teams were kept at bay while the Mount Mary University defense stretched the Cardinals offense and deterred them at every opportunity. The Blue Angels only allowed 13 shots in the first 45 minutes, 10 were on goal. MMU fired five shots in the first frame, four were on goal.

The second half is when the game broke open. Two minutes in, Margrette Jorgensen setup Jhalan Taylor for the first Cardinals goal. The duo would duplicate that play at the 54 minute mark making it 2-0 Cardinals.

Jorgensen continued to take control of the game adding two goals herself and taking control 4-0.

The Blue Angels picked up the offense at the end of regulation as Ashley Pfeiefer (Fr./Elkhart Lake, Wis.) broke past the defense and blasted a shot beyond the reach of the Cardinals goalkeeper, making it 4-1.

With just two minutes remaining, down 5-1, Karina Salgado (Fr./Chicago, Ill.) notched her second goal of the year as she got past the defense to riffle a shot in the net making it 5-2, where the game would end.

Just one goal behind the NCAA DIII leader in saves, Becky Onan (So./Grafton, Wis.) added 21 saves to her total in today's contest. The sophomore leads the Great South Athletic Conference with a save percentage of .821.

Another game in the books, and the Blue Angels now turn their attention towards Robert Morris-Lake County. Their game against the Eagles will be at Mount Mary Field Thu. Oct. 8 beginning at 3:30 pm.
