Groth To Represent MMU In Costa Rica

MILWAUKEE – Mount Mary University Centerback Katy Groth (Racine, Wis.) has been selected to represent her school in the upcoming Beyond Sports Costa Rican Soccer Tour. After two seasons steadying the MMU defense, the sophomore Blue Angel will have a chance to compete with and against other top NCAA DIII talent.

"I think this is an amazing experience for Katy, she will have the opportunity to bring her experiences from the states and display them in Costa Rica," said Mount Mary Head Soccer Coach Jon Gulrajani. "Soccer is the world game, Katy will have a chance to partner with some great collegiate players, work with children in the community, experience the culture and all of it is based around soccer."

The fifth annual event for Beyond Sports selects players who are all-conference winners and/or statistical leaders for their team. As a defensive player, Groth does not have the eye-popping stats of a forward, but the second-year Blue Angel played in every game this season and held their opponents to record lows.

As a unit, the Blue Angels went from 6.00 goals against average in 2015 to a 2.14 goals against average this last season. Groth's activity throughout the season on the defensive end was a big reason for the massive drop from season to season.

Groth will attend the tour in mid-May following MMU Finals Week.
