Blue Angels Prevail Over Devils

EUREKA, Ill. – The Mount Mary University soccer team defeated host Eureka College by a final score of 5-1. Senior Karina Salgado (Chicago, Ill.) led the offensive charge with three goals on the day to help the Blue Angels (1-5) grab their first win of the season over the Red Devils (0-5).

For the first time since her freshman season, Salgado finished the day with a hat-trick. Salgado and the Blue Angels attacked early and often against the Red Devils. MMU dominated possession for the first eight minutes and did not allow their opponent to get their first shot off until 13 minutes into the game.

The Blue Angels took 11 of the first 15 shots in the game, and on the 16th, the Salgado was able to find the net for MMU's first goal of the 2018 campaign. As they continued the attack for the next ten minutes, Salgado again found an opening in the first half and scored her second goal of the game with one minute remaining until halftime.

Freshman Rebecca Haddy (Fr./Waupon, Wis.) scored her first goal of her collegiate career six minutes into the second half. After the Red Devils attacked with the first shot on goal, Haddy was able to break free to push the lead out to 3-0.

Newcomer Kaylie Cook (So./Fairborn, Ohio) scored her first goal just five minutes following Haddy's score. The first ever NCAA goal scored by Cook, came at the 56-minute mark and pushed the score to 4-0.

With ten minutes left to go in the game, the Red Devils continued to attack the goal of the Blue Angels. Phoenix Johnson of the Red Devils laced Eureka's first and only goal of the game, but Salgado quickly responded.

The senior took control of the ball and attacked the opponent's territory when she fired a shot at the 84-minute mark that expanded the lead to 5-1. The third goal of the game for the senior also catapulted her to sixth in the American Collegiate Athletic Association in goals scored.

In Hannah Rose's return to goal, she acquired nine saves on the day and now leads the ACAA in saves and is fifth in save percentage. (Full ACAA Leaderboard)
