Sabercats Snatch Win

MILWAUKEE – Today at the Maranatha Baptist Soccer Field, the Mount Mary University soccer team lost to the Sabercats 6-0. MBU is now 5-5-1 on the season while the Blue Angels move to 1-9.

The Sabercats pressured early on in the rivalry match against the Blue Angels. After MBU attacked with the first three straight shots to open the game, Allison Hernandez quickly controlled a ball on a save from MMU's Hannah Rose (Jr./Jeromesville, Ohio), and while falling down slipped a left-footed shot past an extended Rose into the goal.

Five minutes later, the Sabercats again were ferocious off the loose ball. This time, following a spectacular save by Hannah Rose on a breakaway, MBU intercepted the sequential goal kick at the midline and attacked MMU's goal. Amy Montgomery rushed on with her teammates and came away with the game's second goal of the day.

Moments later, the attacking Sabercats controlled the ball from the left side and weaved a close pass through the MMU defense. That pass came from one side of the goal box to the other, and Hernandez unloaded a shot into the open net to make things 3-0.

At the 32-minute mark, the Sabercats added one more. This time, Hernandez set her teammate up with a ball in MMU's territory. Hannah Evans received the sharp pass and made a move past her defender then chipped the ball into the net to make things 4-0, where it would remain the rest of the half.

MMU turned up the defensive pressure in the second half. Focusing on clearing the territory, the Sabercats were unable to capitalize on loose balls in their opposition's territory. It was not until the 63-minute mark that MBU's Jaclyn Dahl found the back of the goal to extend things to 5-0.

With time winding down, the Sabercats tacked on one more as Alexis Sponable scored with three minutes left on the clock for her ninth goal of the season.

Hannah Rose finished with a total 26 saves in the contest and continues to lead the American Collegiate Athletic Association in saves with 138; Second place in the ACAA in saves has 61.

Karina Salgado (Sr./Chicago, Ill.) led the offense for the Blue Angels with one shot on goal.

After today's contest, the Blue Angels will return to action Sun. Oct. 7 when they head to Hancock, Mich. to take on Finlandia University. The ACAA rival is 7-1-1 to this point in the season and is 2-0 at home. Live video for the contest will be available with links at MtMaryAthletics.com.
