Cardinals Shock Late

MILWAUKEE – Today at Blue Angels Soccer Field, the visiting Andrews University Cardinals defeated the Mount Mary University soccer team by a final score of 2-1. The Cardinals finish their brief season with a record of 2-7 while the Blue Angels move to 1-13 with one game left on their schedule.

The Cardinals and Blue Angels traded shots early in the contest. Andrews quickly tested the reach of junior goalkeeper Hannah Rose (Jeromesville, Ohio), but Rose was up for the task. Quickly corralling the first two shots, the Blue Angels were then able to push the ball into enemy territory.

MMU attacked off multiple corner kicks in Andrew's territory, but could not find the goal. It was not until the 34-minute mark that Halee Van de Boom (So./Saukville, Wis.) controlled the loose ball off her previous corner kick. Van de Boom quickly balanced herself, loaded and fired 20 yards out to find the back of the net. The goal gave the Blue Angels a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

In the second half, the two teams traded possession of the ball regularly. The first 30 minutes of the half saw only three shots. Then after the 70-minute mark, the Cardinals received a second wind and pressured MMU with 3 consecutive corner kicks.

The Cardinals scored on a deflected pass that took a high bounce off Elizabeth Avelar. Cardinal tied the game with her first goal of the season.

Just four minutes later AU found an opening near the MMU goal. Kristen Proctor took a pass from Judith Beltran and knocked it over the outstretched hands of Hannah Rose to take the 2-1 lead.

With time winding down, the Blue Angels pressured their opponent. Van de Boom launched a deep shot with three minutes left on the clock, but the wide-right shot would be the last of the game for the Blue Angels.

Rose finished the game with 10 saves and now leads the American Collegiate Athletic Association in saves with 216.

After today's contest, the Blue Angels will finish their season against Lincoln Christian at Blue Angels Soccer Field. The game is set for Mon. Oct. 29 at 4:00 pm. Live stats and video will be available at MtMaryAthletics.com.
