Blue Angels Shutout Red Lions

MILWAUKEE – Today at the Blue Angels Soccer Field, the Mount Mary University soccer team defeated visiting Lincoln Christian University by a score of 1-0. The Blue Angels (3-13) begin their first winning-streak of the season as the Red Lions drop to 1-12.

Tamara Griffin (Jr./Champaign, Ill.) scored the games lone goal. After a cross right in front of the goal by Nyasia Hardy (Fr./Fort Wayne, Ind.) eight minutes into the second half, Griffin quickly chipped the ball into the left side of the goal.

On defense, the Blue Angels finished with their first shutout of the season. Along with her first contest holding the opponent scoreless, Hannah Rose (Sr./Jeromesville, Ohio) added five more saves to her totals. Rose leads the American Collegiate Athletic Association by over 140 saves with her season total at 247. Rose is also second in NCAA Division III women's soccer in total saves this season, and was nine saves behind the national leader in saves as of this morning. Rose is also just four saves away from tying Becky Onan's ('18) program record for saves in a single season.

The Blue Angels came out aggressively in the first half firing nine shots on offense. Five of those first half shots from the Blue Angels were on goal. LCU took advantage of their openings taking six shots, four on goal in the first half, but Rose was able to reel in each close shot.

In the second half, the teams traded possessions, with the Red Lions taking four shots, one on goal. Although LCU out-shot MMU in the second frame, the Blue Angels landed the game winning goal just eight minutes into the half. A well-timed cross from Nyasia Hardy set Tamara Griffin up on the back side of the goal for Griffin's second goal of the season. Griffin is now second on the team in season-goals and Hardy is first on the team in assists with two.

MMU controlled the ball for the majority of second half. After the goal, the Blue Angels were able to hold off the opposition for a 1-0 victory.

The Blue Angels return to the field Sun. Oct. 27 at 3:00 PM to take on fellow American Collegiate Athletic Association institution, Finlandia University. The Lions are 9-5-1 this season and were selected to the ACAA Conference Tournament. Live stats and video for the game will be available at MtMaryAthletics.com.
