Lions Win

MILWAUKEE – Today at Blue Angels Soccer Field, the visiting Finlandia University Lions defeated the Mount Mary University soccer team by a score of 7-0. The Blue Angels move to 3-14 on the season while the Lions are 10-5-1 as they approach the 2019 American Collegiate Athletic Association Conference Tournament. Hannah Rose (Sr./Jeromesville, Ohio) set the new program record for saves in a season.

Rose reeled in 20 saves in MMU Soccer's penultimate contest of 2019; only four other times this season has Rose had more than 20 saves. This late in the season, Rose leads the ACAA in total saves with 267. That total is now the new record for Mount Mary University soccer for saves which was previously held by Becky Onan ('18).

Along with the new record, Rose is also sitting in second in NCAA Division III women's soccer for total saves.

Nyasia Hardy (Fr./Fort Worth, Ind.) led the offense with two shots. One of which nailed the cross bar on a late penalty kick. Teammate Halee Van de Boom (Jr./Saukville, Wis.) was on the attack with one shot on goal against the Lions.

For the opening 30 minutes of play, the Blue Angels kept their opponent at bay by making the offense constantly move the ball. With few clear shots on the goal, the Lions were not able to clear the opposing defense.

At the 30-minute mark, the Lions were able to hit on a shot 30 yards out from goal when Meaghan Maly passed the ball back to Daisia Knowles. Knowles landed the long shot through heavy traffic to make the score 1-0.

Less than a minute later, Kirsten L'Esperance hit Addie Budzinski crossing from the left side of the field. Budzinski quickly knocked the ball in to move the score to 2-0 at halftime.

The Lions added five more goals in the second half as they continued to attack the goal until the very last minute. After going up 5-0 at the 73-minute mark, the Lions added two goals in the final three minutes of the game. Finlandia hit 23 shots in the second half to MMU's 1. Hannah Rose added eight saves in the second half as well.

MMU Soccer returns to action Tue. Oct. 29 at 3:00 pm at Blue Angels Soccer Field. The Blue Angels will host longtime rival Maranatha Baptist University (5-7). Live stats and video will be available at MtMaryAthletics.com.
