Watertown, WI – The Mount Mary soccer team headed to Maranatha Baptist on Tuesday, seeking a second straight win and a third on the young season. Things looked promising as the Blue Angels scored first, but Maranatha came back with three goals and then held off several potential game tying shots by MMU for a 3-2 win.
Paris Berrospe continued to shine in her first collegiate season, striking with her third goal of the 2023 campaign, putting MMU up 1-0 in the match's ninth minute. Maranatha would even the match in the 29th minute and add a second goal just before the end of the first half, to stake the Sabercats to a 2-1 lead at half.
In the match's second half, each team scored once. Amelia Schroeder scored in the game's 47th minute for Maranatha, but Mount Mary would not give in. In the game's 70th minute, Lydia Omernik scored her first career goal to bring the Blue Angels to within one at 3-2. Mount Mary's offense continued to press until the game's final whistle, but could not find the equalizer they needed to tie the match.
Statistically, the match was nearly even. Maranatha outshot Mount Mary 20-17, and had a slight advantage in shots on goal, 11 to 7.
Coming off of the tight defeat, the Blue Angels (2-5) will resume their home schedule. Mount Mary will play two home matches in three days. Beginning Saturday, September 23rd at 1 pm, the Blue Angels will host Spurgeon College. They will then play another home contest on Monday, September 25th, against Lakeland University.
