Lakers Take Charge Against Blue Angels

MILWAUKEE-- Mount Mary University dropped their dual match against Roosevelt University 9-0. The hot muggy Wednesday night sapped the energy of both teams, but the Lakers got the upper hand and are now 1-1 on the season, making the Blue Angels 0-2.

A slow start for the Blue Angels, the closest match of the contest came early on as the number one doubles' team of Ana Mercado (Jr./Grafton, Wis.)/Marissa Rechlicz (So./West Allis, Wis.) battled the Michelle Beczarski/Emily Minner team, but ultimately came up short 8-6.

Newcomer Amy Gossett (Fr./Franklin, Wis.) gave it her all in her number five singles' match against Jami Dahl. The Lakers sophomore, however, outlasted the rookie winning 6-4, 6-1.

The hard fought matches and gritty effort was not missed by the fans in attendance nor by head tennis coach Callie Schroeder, "Tough loss, but we had some really close matches even though the scores don't depict that. A lot of long points and a lot of deuce games. We just couldn't come out on top."

The 9-0 loss marks the first time since September of 2012 that the Blue Angels fell victim to a full dual match sweep.

The Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference schedule begins shortly, and quickly brings in some of the region's top talent. First, the Blue Angels take on rival Alverno on Sat. Sept. 5 at 10:00 am, and then MSOE, followed by NACC preseason coaches' poll top pick Edgewood.

It is a birth by fire into the new conference for the Blue Angels, and that new beginning is just days away.
