Spartans Take Early Lead To Win

AURORA, Ill. – The Mount Mary University tennis team lost to Aurora University 8-1 today. The loss moves the Blue Angels to 1-8 (1-6) and the Spartans now sit at 4-5 (4-3).

The Spartans were picked third in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference preseason poll. AU showed why on the courts today. The Spartans swept the doubles, the closest match was an 8-2 loss of the no. two doubles. Number one and three doubles both dropped to 8-0 losses.

Amy Gossett (Fr./Franklin, Wis.) won the Blue Angels number three singles 6-4, 7-5. The win for Gossett makes her an even 3-3 in NACC singles matches, the best on the Blue Angels.

Krista Olson (Sr./Appleton, Wis.) provide sparks in the number four singles match, but Jordan Withey of the Spartans held on to win 6-2, 4-6, 10-8.

"Lost some close matches by a few points." Coach Callie Schroeder went on, "Everyone continues to improve in their strokes and get more consistent."

Following the dual match against the Spartans, the Blue Angels will get ready to host Concordia Chicago (1-5). The Blue Angels defeated the Cougars 6-3 in the 2014-15 season opener, and will see what adjustments each team has made on Fri. Sept. 25. The dual match will begin at 6:00 pm at Hart Park in Wauwatosa, Wis.
