DECATUR, Ga. – In the Great South Atlantic Conference consolation match, the Mount Mary University volleyball team lost to Mills 3-1 today on the campus of Agnes Scott. The loss for MMU gives them an overall record of 3-19 and Mills ends their 2015 campaign at 1-19.
The Cyclones attacked with accuracy in the first set, finishing with a team hitting percentage of .250 and only committed a total of three attack errors in the frame. As the Blue Angels tried to crawl back from their early deficit, Mills continued to attack and took the set 25-16.
With the Blue Angels defense loomed around the net in the second set, the Cyclones saw fewer and fewer openings, getting pegged with a match high of 10 team attack errors in the set. MMU denied many opportunities at the net, but had troubles generating their own points consistently in the set and fell 25-19 in the second.
The third saw the true fight of the Blue Angels volleyball team. Mills quickly jumped out to a 7-3 lead on the Blue Angels, but after a kill from Rachel Barker (So./Milwaukee, Wis.) a pair of service aces from Julia Terasa (Jr./Waukesha, Wis.) got MMU right back into the set. The Blue Angels continued to battle and control the set, and went on to take the third set 25-21.
The fourth set, the Blue Angels took an early lead, but traded back and forth with Mills. Falling behind 18-13, Nicole Weggen (Jr./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) blasted two service aces to bring MMU within two. Another service ace from Terasa made the score 19-18, after that the Cyclones separated and went on to win 25-19.
Payton Hintz (So./Almond, Wis.) led the assist column for the Blue Angels with 14. Lauren Harris (Fr./Sheridan, Ill.) led the offensive attack with 10 kills.
The Cyclones Amber Escobar Meza led the game with 17 kills and a very accurate .308 hitting percentage.
MMU will look forward to next season as they continue to build on their success from the 2015 campaign. As their offense made a huge step in many categories from 2014 including hitting percentage, total kills and total assists, even though they played eight less games in 2015. 10 months to go for more MMU volleyball!
