Sabercats Get Win

WATERTOWN, Wis. – Tonight at the MBU Gymnasium, the Mount Mary University volleyball team lost 3-0 to host Maranatha Baptist University. The Sabercats took the sets 25-13, 25-6 and 25-3 to move to 15-14 on the season as the Blue Angels are 0-19 on the 2017 campaign.

An aggressive early attack for the Blue Angels as sophomore Adrianna Nester (Anaheim, Calif.) came out of the gate firing three kills in her nine total attacks in the first set. The Sabercats resisted that performance with 15 team kills in the opening frame on their 39 total attacks.

The accuracy from the Sabercats transformed a 6-4 lead to a 14-8 lead. Continued pressure from the front court of MBU led to a 25-13 win.

In the second set, the Blue Angels jumped ahead quickly 1-0 on a bad set by their opponent. Trading position early, the teams were locked at 2-2, then the Sabercats went on multiple scoring runs. With no team errors on their 22 total attacks, the Sabercats flawless second set yielded a 25-6 winning set and a 2-0 match lead.

In the final frame the Blue Angels took a 1-0 lead when Payton Hintz (Almond, Wis.) set fellow senior Sarah Amoroso (Wauwatosa, Wis.) up for a kill in front of the net. With Hintz still at the line, the Blue Angels went up 2-0 in the frame, but the Sabercats went on a season high 25-1 run. A long stint that was only broken up by again Hintz setting up Amoroso for a kill. MBU took the final set 25-3 and the match 3-0.

Nester led the Blue Angels offense with four kills on 18 total attacks. Teammate Payton Hintz led the team with nine assists and one service ace.

Following tonight's penultimate match, the Blue Angels will finish up their regular season tomorrow night at the Bloechl Center. MMU will host Silver Lake College (7-20) in their 2017 finale set for Wed. Oct. 25 at 7:00 pm. Live stats and video will be made available at mtmaryathletics.com.
