Sabercats Grab Late Win

WATERTOWN, Wis. – Tonight at the MBU Gymnasium, the Mount Mary University volleyball team lost to Maranatha Baptist University 3-1. The Blue Angels (0-13) took the opening set of the match in a narrow 25-23 fashion, then the host Sabercats won the next three sets 25-13, 25-8 and 25-12 to take the match.

In the first set of the night, the Sabercats pulled ahead 6-2. The Blue Angels answered back with a five-point run before the two teams traded points back and forth. Midway through the set with Adrianna Nester (Sr./Anaheim, Calif.) at the service line, the Blue Angels surged out in front of the Sabercats 16-13.

MMU continued to add to their lead in the set, Alessa Nelson (Sr./Rockford, Ill.) delivered a service ace late to give the Blue Angels their biggest lead of the night at 21-15. Although the Sabercats finished with 14 team kills in the set, MMU took the set 25-23.

The Sabercats took an early lead in the second set of the match. After a 2-2 tie, MBU 7-2 run that gave them a lead they would not surrender throughout the set.

 The Blue Angels finished with one of their top offensive sets of the night with eight team kills. The opposition completed their most efficient set of the night themselves with 15 team kills, one error on 29 total attacks. MBU went on to take the set 25-13 and tie the match 1-1.

In the third set, the Sabercats took an early and continued to pressure their opposition. With an error-free set, MBU fired nine team kills on 15 total attacks. Although the Blue Angels fired three service aces in the set, the Sabercats connected with five of their own on their way to a 25-8 set-win.

In the fourth set, the Sabercats took a 4-0 lead, but the Blue Angels shot right back with a 5-2 run. MBU hit with another accurate set landing 13 team kills on 34 total attacks. In addition to the efficient set, MBU ended the frame on an 8-0 run to take the set and the match.

Brianna Ecker (Fr./Fond du Lac, Wis.) led the assist column with 10. She also led her team with four kills and 15 digs. Teammate Alessa Nelson led her squad behind the service line with five service aces and pitched in with six assists.

The Blue Angels will return to action Mon. Sept. 23 when they host Silver Lake at the Bloechl Center. Live stats and video will be available for the contest at MtMaryAthletics.com.
