Blue Angels Sweep Lakers

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- For the first time this season, the Mount Mary University volleyball team won their match against Holy Family College. The Blue Angels (1-13) not only ended their 13-match losing streak, but the team also evened up the season series with the Lakers (1-12).

The Lakers took an early 3-1 lead in the night's opening set. However, the Blue Angels surged in response to that run and would not surrender the lead again until the third set.

With Adrianna Nester (Sr./Anaheim, Calif.) at the service line, the Blue Angels launched an early 6-0 run that gave the Blue Angels a comfortable lead in the first set. One of the most effective sets of the night, MMU cracked seven team kills with only two team errors. To go along with Nester's service ace, the Blue Angels were able to propel themselves to a 25-16 set win for the early lead.

MMU started the second set on a 10-4 run. The set was the most efficient night of the evening for the Blue Angels with eight team kills and only one error. To go along with their accurate hitting, MMU forced the Lakers into six team errors on their 24 total attacks. After a 20-12 lead for the Blue Angels was shrunk down to just four points after the Lakers responded, MMU grabbed the final two points of the set with the very last on an Aislinn Strusz (So./Aurora, Ill.) kill.

Leading 2-0, the Blue Angels traded points with the opposition early on in the third. After a 6-6 tie, the Lakers sprung for a 5-0 run to grab the lead. Holy Family sustained that lead until the Blue Angels started a 9-0 run with Nester behind the service line yet again. Nester took ten straight serves as the Blue Angels recaptured the late lead 22-17. MMU forced the Lakers into multiple errors to close out the match and to grab the 25-18 set win.

Emma Carufel (So./St. Francis, Wis.) led the Blue Angels offense tonight against the Lakers. Carufel led the Blue Angels with seven total kills while also protecting the net with a total of three blocks.

Teammate Brianna Ecker (Fr./Fond du Lac, Wis.) kept her offense going all night long with a team high 16 assists and three service aces. Her teammate Jacklyn Mozdzen (So./Wautoma, Wis.) also pitched in on offense with six kills on her 15 attacks.

The Blue Angels now prepare for their next match in Chicago, Ill. against the Moody Bible Institute Archers. The Archers took the win when the two teams met at the Rockford Invitational earlier this season. The teams will return to the court Fri. Sept. 27th for a 7:00 pm showdown.
