Sabercats Win Match

MILWAUKEE -- Tonight at the Bloechl Center, the visiting Maranatha Baptist University Sabercats defeated the Mount Mary University volleyball team 3-0. After the win for MBU, the team moves to 12-3 on the season while the Blue Angels are now 2-18.

Brianna Ecker (Fr./Fond du Lac, Wis.) led the Blue Angels offense tonight against the Sabercats. Ecker landed a team high seven kills on her 28 total attacks on the evening. Along with leading her squad with a pair of service aces, Ecker also kept a slew of the opposition's shots off the floor with a team high 13 digs.

With Ecker moving outside, senior Alessa Nelson (Sr./Rockford, Ill.) has taken charge of the setting duties for MMU. The senior has had plenty of experience during her tenure at Mount Mary, and tonight against their rival Maranatha Baptist, Nelson led her squad with eight assists.

Libero Megan Johnson (Jr./Waukesha, Wis.) and senior Adrianna Nester (Anaheim, Calif.) also kept their opponents from landing shots. Johnson pulled in 11 digs, while Nester cleared seven digs and landed three kills.

The Sabercats led early in the first set and continued to push their offense with 13 kills and three errors. The Blue Angels cut the lead down to two on multiple occasions, but the Sabercats 6-1 run midway through the frame gave them a lead they would not surrender on the way to a 25-14 set.

After the Sabercats took an early lead in the second, MMU came storming back with an extended run of their own. Once the teams traded the lead a few times, the Blue Angels landed a 5-0 run that gave them a 13-9 lead over their rival. The Sabercats then ended the comeback on a 16-2 run that gave MBU a 25-15 set-win.

MMU opened up the third set in a similar fashion as they recaptured the lead at 5-3. But the Sabercats landed a match high 14 team kills in the set on their 41 total attacks. The Blue Angels forced MBU into six team errors in the set, but an 8-2 run midway through the set gave Maranatha Baptist the lead and eventually the 25-18 set-win.

MMU returns to the court this weekend when they head to Indiana to take on Calumet St. Joseph. The Blue Angels are scheduled for a 6:00 PM start time on Fri. Oct. 11. Live video for the contest will be available at MtMaryAthletics.com.
