MANITOWOC, Wis. -- Today at the Holy Family College Triangular, the Mount Mary University volleyball team won both of their matches. The Blue Angels first defeated the host Lakers 3-0, then defeated the Faith Baptist Bible College Eagles 3-1 in game two of the triangular. Senior Adrianna Nester also tied the program's record for service aces in a match against the Eagles.
The Blue Angels had a number of major contributors in their victory over the Holy Family College Lakers (1-20). On defense, sophomore Emma Carufel (So./St. Francis, Wis.) led her squad at the net with a pair of block solos.
Teammates Brianna Ecker (Fr./Fond du Lac, Wis.) and Megan Johnson (Jr./Waukesha, Wis.) helped keep the ball of the court; Ecker led the team with eight digs while Johnson added five. Ecker also led her team in kills and kill percentage with eight kills and .462 kill percentage. Johnson stood out with a team high six service aces.
Senior Alessa Nelson (Rockford, Ill.) did her best to keep the Blue Angels firing on offense. In the day's first match, Nelson led the team with 10 assists.
MMU won the opening set in match one firing on all cylinders. While they forced the host Lakers to commit three team errors, the Blue Angels hit with precision as they landed eight team kills on their 18 total attacks. The effort led to MMU taking the set 25-14.
The second set of the opening match was never in doubt for the Blue Angels, With their most efficient set of the match, MMU slammed seven team kills with no errors throughout the entire set. On the other side of the court, the Blue Angels forced the Lakers into a match high six team errors. MMU went on to take the set 25-9.
In the third set, the Blue Angels continued to hit aggressively with eight team kills on their 28 total attacks. The aggression led to the Lakers committing four team errors and landing only one team kills in the final set.The Blue Angels won the final set 25-16 for their third win of the season.
In the day's second match, the Blue Angels and Eagles kept things close throughout. Again, the Blue Angels had a number of contributors in their 3-1 win over FBBC.
Adrianna Nester (Sr./Anaheim, Calif.) led the offensive charge and tied the MMU single-match record for service aces with nine; Payton Hintz ('18) also landed nine service aces in 2016 against Great Lakes Christian.
Nester also landed a team high 13 kills. Brianna Ecker was right behind Nester with 11 kills on her thirty total attacks. Ecker was also second on the team in assists with nine.
Nelson again kept the Blue Angels going on offense with a team high 10 assists. She landed an additional three service aces to help the MMU offense. Teammate Megan Johnson also landed three service aces and led her team with 15 digs.
The Blue Angels won the first set of the night despite the opposition finishing with their best offensive set of the match. FBBC landed 13 team kills and four errors in the set, but the Blue Angels withstood during the extra-points and grabbed the 26-24 win.
MMU forced the opposition into eight team errors in the second set on their way to another close 25-21 set win. The Eagles turned their errors around in the third set and landed their most efficient frame of the match landing nine kills on 50 attacks. FBBC used that efficiency to take the set 25-19.
MMU closed out the match with their best set of the evening. After an early lead, the Blue Angels were able to stretch things out with a late run. The Blue Angels continued to attack on offense and were able to get the 25-18 set-win and overall 3-1 match-victory.
