Canonneers Take Tourney Match

Phoenixville, Penn. – The Mount Mary University volleyball team closed out their postseason today at the American Collegiate Athletic Association against Pratt. The Blue Angels (6-23) took part in the annual ACAA Conference Tournament for the first time in program history against the Cannoneers (20-7).

The Blue Angels were led by Adrianna Nester (Sr./Anaheim, Calif.) in her last collegiate match tonight on the campus of the University of Valley Forge. The senior added a team high seven kills while also keeping the floor clear with 13 digs.

Fellow senior Alessa Nelson (Rockford, Ill.) kept her offense going with a team high ten assists against the Cannoneers. Nelson added two kills and five digs to help her squad in her final match in the navy and gold.

Libero Megan Johnson (Jr./Waukesha, Wis.) did her best on the back lines to prevent the opposition from scoring. Johnson completed the contest with an MMU high of 13 digs. Teammate Brianna Ecker (Fr./Fond du Lac, Wis.) helped her team's offense with a team high two service aces to go along with her five kills and seven digs.

After MMU grabbed an early 2-1 lead in the opening match, the Cannoneers sprung for a 10-0 run that gave them the lead. The Blue Angels did not give in, responding with three extended runs, but Pratt took the set 25-17. The Cannoneers hit 11 team kills on their 34 total attacks while MMU landed six kills on their 37 attacks.

In the second set, the Cannoneers worked their way out to a six point lead early. The Blue Angels continued to pressure their opponents with three runs of three or more points in a row. MMU landed seven team kills and forced the opposition into a match high eight team errors in the set, but Pratt held onto the early lead for a close 25-21 set-win.

The two teams traded points early on in the third and final set of the match. After an early 8-4 lead taken by the Cannoneeres, MMU came right back with a run to cut the deficit to just one. Both teams finished the night with their most effiecent sets of the match. The Blue Angels landed seven team kills on their 28 total attacks, Pratt hit 11 team kills on their 30 total attacks. After a pair of extend runs by the Cannoneers, Pratt took the set 25-16. The Cannoneers will now take on University of California Santa Cruz tomorrow at 10:00 am CST.

The Blue Angels will head home and begin their off-season after their conference tournament match. MMU finished their 2019 campaign 6-23 on their way to their first ever ACAA Conference Tournament appearance.
