Blue Angels Cap Season at NCAA Midwest Regionals

WINNECONNE, Wis. – The 11th annual NCAA Midwest Regionals took place today at the Lake Breeze Golf Course. Among the near 40 teams taking part in the race, the Mount Mary University cross country team finished in 35th place. Washington University defended their crown from last season's Midwest Regional; last year's national champion, Paige Lawler took first place in the race with a 21:53.0 time on the six kilometer track.

Although sunlight was shining through, the temperatures never exceeded 39 degrees. With the cold and still soggy conditions, the track wore thin quickly and be came muddy early. Out of the 257 total runners in the 2019 event, Daniela Torres (Sr./West Allis, Wis.) led the Blue Angels pack crossing the time line at 28:34.3. Torres finished 220 th out of the huge pool of runners. Torres was able to take off a full minute from her 6-k time at the NACC Championships on November 2 of this year.

Not far behind Torres was teammate Ellie McMeeken (Fr./West Bend, Wis.). The freshman runner finished in 230th place in the event. McMeeken trudge trough the long difficult course with a final time of 29:08.4. The young runner took nearly three minutes off her final time from MMU's last official race.

Staying close together in the pack, Emily Green (So./Waukesha, Wis.) and Miranda Fluegge (Jr./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) crossed the finish line in 239th and 242nd place respectively. Green was able to trek through the muddy six-kilometer course with a final time of 30:00.4 and Fluegge crossed the time line at 30:51.0.

Johnelle Suto (Jr./Enterprise, Ore.) rounded out the MMU scoring in the annual Midwest Regional Championship. Suto finished 250th overall with a 32:24.2 time on the lengthy course.

The cross country team just finished one of the coldest seasons in program history and now approach their offseason. As they continued to cut times and improve their placing throughout the season, the Blue Angels will now be able to recoup and prepare for 2020.
