Seniors Oviedo and Runge

Seniors Oviedo and Runge

MILWAUKEE – As their two NCAA careers in basketball come closer to their completion, Jess Runge (Sr./Freedom, Wis.) and Ariel Oviedo (Sr./Shawano, Wis.) share the next installment of the Blue Angels Spotlight Player(s) Award.

The two Blue Angels transferred to Mount Mary University to begin the 2015-16 season. In an instant impact, the transfers helped MMU to a 5-15 record in their opening season, all the while staying near the top five in steals per game in the newly entered Great South Athletic Conference. Eventhough both second on the team in scoring in 2015-16 with 8.1 points per game each, Runge and Oviedo focused to improve their offensive skills.

Hitting the gym hard between seasons, both Runge and Oviedo were able to add a full nine or more percentage points to their season field goal percentage from their prior athletic year. Runge’s boost in efficiency has seen her points per game average jump from 8.1 in 2015-16 to 13.8 in her senior year.

In their time here, Runge and Oviedo have combined for 626 points, 200 assists and have bothered the opposition’s offense in nearly every single game grabbing 174 combined steals.

Watch these two seniors play their final home game at the Bloechl Center Sat. Feb. 18 beginning at 6:30 pm for Senior Night. Those who cannot attend Senior Night will be able to follow live at mtmaryathletics.com.
