Smalley Stepping Right In

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University softball team is 4-7 on the young season, and part of the team’s early success has been due to the hard throwing Haley Smalley (Jr./Columbus, Ind.). Not only has the junior transfer started five games for MMU this season, but Smalley (3-3) came in late on Sunday against Skidmore to help the Blue Angels grab the extra-innings win.

To this point in the season, Smalley has led the Blue Angels on the mound in multiple categories. Of note, Smalley has logged the most innings in the circle than any other Blue Angel with 32.0. The consistency of the junior hurler shines through each start for Smalley, as to this point in the season, every game she has started, she has finished with a complete game.

In addition to being a reliable starter for MMU, Smalley also leads her team in total strikeouts thrown with 14. The hard thrower is not afraid to let her defense record the outs, however, Smalley recorded four or more strikeouts in each of her wins as starter.

Smalley has also chipped in at the plate for the Blue Angels. Although officially 3-for-23 at the plate, Smalley has made each appearance at the plate count as she has an on-base percentage .070 higher than her batting average and is fourth on the team in RBIs with four.

Smalley and the Blue Angels return to action this Tuesday as they continue the 2019 Tucson Invitational. The Blue Angels are scheduled to play seven more games in the invite as they resume play Tue. Mar. 12 at 11:00 AM MST. Check for links at MtMaryAthletics.com.
