MMU Splits at Invite

HANCOCK, Mich. – The Mount Mary University volleyball team split a pair of matches today in the SISU Classic finale. The two-day tournament hosted by Finlandia University saw MMU lose the first contest 3-0 to Buena Vista University, then the Blue Angels turned the tables and defeated the host 3-0 making MMU 2-17 on the season.

The Blue Angels opened up the match against the Beavers with a pair of points and an early lead. BVU responded with a 10-1 run to recapture the lead they would not surrender the rest of the set. The Beavers finished the set with 15 team kills on 27 total attacks and their most efficient set of the day-two at the SISU Classic. MMU ended the set with their highest kill percentage of the match, however, BVU took the set 25-9.

After the Beavers took an early lead in the second set, the Blue Angels tied the frame right back at 2-2. The two teams traded points and after a 9-7 lead, the Beavers went on a 10-1 run. Following the run, BVU grabbed the set 25-12. The Blue Angels finished the frame with their most kills in game one.

MMU took the lead in the third set at 4-2 and maintained that lead throughout the early portion of the set. The Beavers started a 7-1 run that pushed them in front for their final 25-14 set-win.

Adrianna Nester (Sr./Anaheim, Calif.) led the Blue Angels on offense with eight kills on 33 total attacks. The senior also pulled in seven digs to lead her team in that category as well. Brianna Ecker (Fr./Fond du Lac, Wis.) led MMU with seven assists.

MMU snapped their four-match losing streak when they played host Finlandia University. The Blue Angels opened up the win with their most efficient set of the night. The Blue Angels drilled 11 team kills on their 28 total attacks. After the Blue Angels fell behind two early, they stormed back with a 6-1 run. Once MMU grabbed the lead after that run, they never surrendered it on the way to a 25-18 win.

In the second set, the two teams traded points and the lead until 18-18. MMU scored seven of the final 12 points in the set to grab their second straight set-victory.

The Blue Angels took an early lead in the third and final frame. MMU went up by as much as five points, but the Lions tied the set multiple times. At 19-19 the Blue Angels attacked on offense and went on a 5-2 run for the win. MMU had their hardest hitting frame of the tournament with 16 kills.

Brianna Ecker led MMU on offense with 16 kills. Teammate Nester chipped in with nine kills.

Alessa Nelson (Sr./Rockford, Ill.) charged the Blue Angels on offense with 27 assists.
